My car insurance is super high now. How much are you paying and why?

I was with Allstate and had a minor accident that wasn’t my fault, but because the other driver’s insurance (National General) was owned by Allstate, they fought me on the claim, and I ended up paying about $2500 out of pocket. Because of this bad experience, I would advise others to stay away from Allstate.

I got a quote from Erie in New York City, and they were 36% cheaper than my current insurer, Chubb. I don’t drive much, mostly using the subway, so I was probably paying too much for a high-end company when I didn’t need extensive coverage.

I found that by switching from State Farm to another company, I saved a solid amount of money. Geico was the cheapest for me, even though I know some people say they’re not good. It’s important to compare coverage limits though, as one company might be $50 more but offer slightly better coverage.

I used to have a low mileage discount, but now that I’m commuting, my rates might change. I heard that Progressive has a “Name Your Price” tool that helps you customize your coverage to fit your budget. Maybe I should try that since my Geico premium increased by $42.

I’ve been with Geico for a long time, and while my rate went up around $42 per month when I lost my low mileage discount, I still find their service good. Someone I know in Tampa, Florida, pays around $400 a month just for auto with Amica, but that’s for a Honda Passport and a Toyota 4Runner, and they also have home, boat, and flood insurance bundled for a total of $1600 a month.
