I’ve had Healthy Paws for my dog, and when he was attacked by another dog, they sent us a check in three days. His mouth and leg surgery cost a significant amount, and they covered it well, including a dental cleaning for tooth extraction. Even though my premiums have gone up over time, their quick and comprehensive coverage in an emergency made it worthwhile for me.

I used to have Trupanion, and while their coverage seemed comprehensive, my monthly premiums for my two dogs and a cat increased by 50% in one year. I was paying a significant amount each month, and thankfully hadn’t had any major claims, so I decided to switch to a high-deductible plan with another company to lower my ongoing costs.

As a vet tech with over 10 years of experience, I’ve seen so many pet owners regret not having insurance. While premiums can seem like an extra cost, the heartbreak of not being able to afford necessary treatment that could cost thousands of dollars is much worse. I personally use Lemonade and think that finding an affordable plan is crucial – don’t cancel it if you can help it.

I’ve had Lemonade for my puppy for almost two years and have been really happy. I pay about $32 a month and they reimbursed me the same day or the next day for a couple of claims. When my puppy broke her leg, they paid out over $5,000 after my deductible. For that peace of mind for less than $400 a year, it’s been totally worth it.

I decided against pet insurance and instead put $50 a month into a dedicated savings account for my cat. Over the past five years, I’ve saved up $3,000. My cat has only had a couple of minor issues costing around $300 total, so I’m still well ahead compared to what I would have paid in premiums. For me, self-insuring has been the more financially sound option so far.
