Hey everyone, I’m a new pet owner and trying to figure out if pet insurance is a smart move. With monthly premiums and deductibles, it feels like another big expense. For those of you who have it or have decided against it, what has your experience been? I’m looking for honest opinions and would love to hear if you think the cost is justified by the benefits.

I had a bad experience with Embrace. They refused to pay out on claims, and after the third denial, I cancelled all four of my pet insurance plans with them. I then switched to Trupanion through Chewy and have been much more satisfied with their quick claim responses and reasonable prices, which they only increase if local vet costs increase, not just because my pet gets older. This shows that company reputation and claim handling are crucial.

I’ve heard that Trupanion is often amongst the highest in terms of price when getting quotes from multiple providers. However, they have a good reputation for comprehensive coverage and their Trupanion Express for direct vet pay is something many people appreciate. For me, it’s about balancing the potential cost with the level of coverage and convenience.

I’m someone who believes insurance is for things you can’t afford not to pay for if something goes wrong. For me, a sudden vet bill of $5,000 or $10,000 would be difficult to handle. So, I pay a monthly premium for pet insurance for the peace of mind that I wouldn’t have to make a devastating decision based solely on finances.

I tried Embrace for my Sheltie for almost 14 years. While the premiums got pricey as she aged, they covered almost 80 medical claims over that time, including many ER visits for pneumonia. We only had one minor dental cleaning item not covered to our satisfaction. Over the long term, the amount they paid out far exceeded what I paid in premiums.
