Hey everyone, I just lost my job and really need to get legal car insurance ASAP in Iowa so I can start driving to look for new work. I’m 22, have a learner’s permit with no driving history, and will be driving a high-mileage 2002 Buick. My budget is incredibly tight, and I’m only looking for the absolute bare minimum coverage to legally drive while learning with a licensed person. Does anyone know the cheapest companies or any secrets to getting the lowest possible rate?

Don’t fall for those super low advertised rates you see, like $30 a month. Those are usually just to get your attention, and once you put in your information, the price will likely be much higher. I’ve seen those ads all the time, and the cheapest liability-only policy I’ve actually seen quoted was around $400 per year. Just be prepared for the real numbers to be different.

When you’re looking at those really cheap quotes, make sure you’re comparing the same coverage levels. Sometimes a company will advertise a very low price, but that might be for the absolute state minimum liability, which might not be enough to protect you if you cause an accident. It’s a balance between affordability and the risk you’re willing to take.

The best advice I can give is to shop around for insurance every 6 to 12 months. I used to stick with the same company for years, but I realized that rates can creep up over time. By getting new quotes regularly from different insurers, I’ve managed to save hundreds of dollars each year.

If you or a family member has a military background, definitely check out USAA. I’ve been with them for years, and even though some people say their rates aren’t always the absolute lowest, I consistently find them to be very competitive, and their customer service has always been great.
