I had to cancel a domestic trip once due to an ear infection, and my travel insurance helped me out. Even though your trip to Japan is international, unexpected things can still happen that could cause cancellations or delays. That $100 could save you a lot of money if your plans get disrupted.

I always get travel health insurance, even if I don’t insure the rest of my trip. You can find cheaper plans that just cover health issues for around $30 USD, depending on your age. To me, the biggest risk is unexpected medical bills, and that’s what I prioritize covering.

I only buy travel insurance when it’s required for a specific reason. For a regular trip without any high-risk activities, I usually rely on my regular health insurance’s emergency coverage abroad and the travel perks of my credit cards. So, for a simple 30-day trip, I might skip the extra $100.

I learned the hard way that not having insurance can be a big mistake. Someone mentioned being stuck with a huge bill after needing surgery in a Japanese hospital. Even if it’s a low chance of something serious happening, the potential cost of thousands or tens of thousands of dollars makes that $100 seem like a very smart investment.

I usually check if my credit cards offer any travel insurance before buying a separate policy. Sometimes, if you book your flights or hotels with a certain card, you might already have coverage for things like flight delays or lost luggage. It’s worth looking into to see if you can avoid spending that extra $100.
