I’ve used several big companies over the last 15 years, including KFB, State Farm, Nationwide, and Geico. Honestly, when it comes down to price, they all seem pretty similar in the long run; you might get a cheaper quote initially, but it will likely go up eventually. Since my personal claims experiences with State Farm and Nationwide were “dealt with very well”, I’d prioritize a company known for decent customer service over just the lowest price.

I tried KFB, and it was an “absolutely awful” experience, especially when dealing with claims. A friend of the family who works in home restoration also said that “Auto Owners and KFB are the best as far as just paying up without a fight when a claim is made”. However, another person I know found KFB to be lacking in technology, making simple changes like payment methods require calling their local agent. It seems their claim service might be good, but other aspects can be frustrating.

I used to have Liberty Mutual for auto, and when I had a claim, they “refused to pay out” initially. It got so bad I had to hire a lawyer, and only then did they finally pay up. Based on this terrible experience with their claims handling, I would definitely avoid them for homeowners insurance too; I don’t want to have to involve legal action to get what I’m owed.

Geico gave me a really solid rate initially, but after a couple of years, my auto insurance went up by $200 even though I had no tickets or claims. When I called them, they lowered it back after explaining it was due to the average mileage in my state, which wasn’t accurate for me since I work from home and barely drive. I also bundled my homeowners with them and haven’t had a claim yet, but this experience taught me to always question rate jumps.

Erie Insurance has been fantastic for me. My friend had a $15,000 car repair after an accident, and they said there was “Zero hesitation” in getting the work done. Because of this positive experience from someone I trust, I chose them for my home and auto bundle, and my rates have only gone up slightly this year, less than some other companies my neighbors use.
