Hey community members! I’m about to book a trip I’ve been dreaming of for years, and the topic of travel insurance keeps popping up. It adds a noticeable cost, and I’m wondering if it’s truly worth the investment for peace of mind. Have you ever been in a situation where travel insurance was a lifesaver? Or maybe you bought it and never needed it? I’d love to hear your real-life experiences – the good, the bad, and the “it could have been so much worse if I didn’t have it” stories!

I used to always buy travel insurance, but after a frustrating experience trying to get reimbursed for medical care abroad with a well-known company, I now primarily rely on the trip delay and cancellation policies offered by my travel credit card. However, for riskier trips like mountaineering or motorcycling, I would absolutely get a comprehensive plan.

I’ve been using Geo Blue for health insurance on my international trips, and it’s been incredibly affordable. For an 8-day trip to China, my policy was less than $30. When I got sick once and had to pay for a doctor out of pocket, I was reimbursed quickly for the full amount.

I’m in my 70s, and for any expensive trip I plan, especially internationally, travel insurance is non-negotiable. While it might be more expensive for seniors, the potential costs of medical care abroad are much higher, making it a worthwhile investment for my health and financial security.

I had a minor accident on a scooter in Bali and learned the hard way to read the fine print. My insurance denied my over $5,000 claim because my policy had an exclusion for motorbikes, and I wasn’t wearing a helmet and didn’t have a scooter license, which were also requirements for coverage.
