Has anyone tried Root Insurance? Is it a good choice?

I’m really tempted by Root Insurance because their initial quote is significantly lower than what I’m currently paying with a traditional insurer. They say good drivers can save a lot through their app-based tracking. However, I’ve seen some worrying reviews about rates going up after the initial “test drive” period and difficulties with claims. For those of you who have tried Root, what was your experience? Did your rates stay low, and how was their service when you needed it?

I had Root for about three years, and while they started great with a premium around $199 a month, it literally crept up at every renewal. My last quote was $699 and some change for a month for two 2018 vehicles and a barely driven classic car with full coverage. I immediately switched to Progressive and got the same or better coverage for less than that amount for a six-month payment.

I tried the Root app for a month, and they quoted me just over $400 for six months, which is about $130 less than what I currently pay for similar coverage. However, I couldn’t find information about their AM Best rating, so I decided not to switch. Knowing a company’s financial stability is important to me.

When I had a vandalism incident with my car insured by Root, they didn’t send appraisers and based their estimate on photos. The three repair shops I got quotes from all estimated around $6700 for the repairs, but Root was only willing to pay $1200. We ended up paying out of pocket and switched back to Progressive.

My experience with Root was not great. After a two-week review where we all got driving scores of 9/10 and 10/10, our originally agreed premium went up by $2300. Even though it was still better than our previous insurer, Progressive, it was a significant and unexplained increase.
